Generally, Camera Assistants don’t have their own cameras, especially one SO specific. You know most cameras shoot about the same these days, right? Just get a good full-frame cinema camera, and, more importantly, the correct LENS, and you should be good to go.
That's a good note, Edmund Lloyd - camera operators may have their own equipment, and could be hired for B Unit filming separate from the principal photography. But you're right - 1st ACs are usually focus-pullers, so don't own cameras.
I wish I had an Arri Alexa....
