Hey guys! I'm trying to get my short film started and could use some pointers. Would it be possible to shoot on my phone with the filmic app and have it edited for a small cost? What is my best option for getting it shot?
Yes you can do that. There are some free editing programs available in Windows (I know nothing about Apple) that are quite limited in scope - but I mentioned that they are free. The phone cameras use a very small sensor with a fixed focus lens. They really are ENG designed cameras (Electronic News Gathering) with little creativity incorporated. So the answer is yes you can shoot it on your phone and you can edit it for free. The result won't be a great cinematic masterpiece but it can be a very valuable learning process - go for it!
You'll always be behind when it comes to the hi-tech equipment (I shoot a BlackMagic 6K now, but my computer can't handle the RAW files). Shoot what you got & learn as you go. Keep shootin', & keep learnin'.
Hey Shay, this is Karen from the Stage 32 team. I just wanted to let you know I moved your post from Anything Goes to Filmmaking / Directing, as it fits much better there. Let me know if you have any questions, and all the best to you!
I sat in on a live session this year during the Beverly Hills film fest with Nick Vallelonga, Nate Thomas and Costas Mandylor and they emphatically agreed that any film medium (be it a camera, a Gopro or an iphone) is a valid way to produce a film. So short answer, yes. Let us know how your progress goes.
I shot my doc on a really bad cell phone. Edited with a friend who has Adobe. The film was accepted into over a dozen film festivals, and it won 1st place in three. So, shoot with what you got :)
Hi Shay, why don't use stock footage or existing footage first to visualize your idea and then go for shooting yourself? or you think it's not helpful?

Sure, anything that makes pictures... as in writing a script, concept will push it forward, not so much technique...
In my tryout directing days, I've once spent 10.000 MKD ('round 200 bucks) on a camera I hadn't used once...dumbest deal I ever made...
