Animation : do I need an NDA for my pitch? by Daniel Napoli

Daniel Napoli

do I need an NDA for my pitch?

So I registered my pitch deck and pilot script with the WGA. I'm still tooling with it but have been encouraged to start showing it off soon. Is it advisable to draft an NDA, or is this overkill given the registration?

Hey Daniel! You're fine with a WGA registration and an NDA is overkill. In fact, many people will be put off by such a request as it can be seen as someone who will be difficult to work with or may be a potential lawsuit. Producers, companies, and studios want to work with you. They'd prefer to make something with you and make money than go through legal issues. Hey, Daniel Napoli. I've never heard of a producer, director, production company, etc. asking a writer to sign an NDA for a pitch deck. When an NDA is needed, the producer, director, etc. will send you an NDA. You (the writer) don't draft an NDA.

I suggest registering your pilot and pitch deck with the U.S. Copyright Office because a WGA registration doesn't give you much protection:

Niki H is right. NDA is overkill. Most people will not sign it. Just register your work with WGA.
