Introduce Yourself : Aspiring/Amateur screenwriter by Jan Gritsenko

Jan Gritsenko

Aspiring/Amateur screenwriter

Hi everyone!

My name is Jan Gritzenko and as many of you-I’m a crazy cinephile.

Love the art and the craft behind each movie-directing,editing,composing,VFX but most of all I’ve always gravitated towards screenwriting the most because of the sheer power the written words have and the immense importance I see in stories being told properly and poignantly.

Now…I’m just 22,a nobody from basically nowhere who just moved to London with a big dream, a dream that I’m definitely working on because as many of you too I learn from all of my movies I watch, from the greatest filmmakers and my favourites like:

Spielberg,Cameron,Raimi,Nolan,Villeneuve,Scorsese,De Palma,Coppola and the list can go on and on as I’m a huge fan of the sci-fi and horror genre which are known for many big and smaller artistic voices like Cronin,Peele and Aster to name a few,I love these genres because they’re so much more than one thing it can always be more like horror-comedy Sci-Fi-Drama and etc, they’re extremely versatile and give such a huge sandbox to play around it’s inspiring beyond anything!

But then again,I’m an absolute newbie who learns from movies, essays and books like save the cat! And from Syd Field,I’m basically a carte blanche who’s dying to get out of his comfort zone to meet and talk to new people who will help him to get to his desired goal of getting into the industry.

I couldn’t have asked to be in a better place for that among like minded people.

Thank you for your time and hope to grow and learn here!

Geoff Hall

Hi Jan Gritsenko it’s great to see you here on Strage32. Before you dive in, please fill out your Bio, as it helps personalise your experience and helps people connect with a person and not just an account.

Have you started writing a screenplay yet? Which films inspire you to write?

Jan Gritsenko

Will fill out the Bio right away!

Still hasn’t started writing the screenplay yet,I’m gathering all of my ideas currently into one place as puzzle pieces and will start writing it hopefully soon, although must admit it’s a little intimidating…

For me there isn’t any one particular type of film that inspire me to write,if anything it’s a mix of everything and anything!

Latest examples-from the big budget blockbuster world I felt like Cameron’s Way of Water was a huge step up from the first one due to its much stronger script that is exciting, thrilling but never loses sights of its main characters and core themes! In that same category I’d put NOPE from Peele and The Batman which was very tightly written.

As for other examples that really motivated me to go for it are Everything,Everywhere all at once, Aftersun Evil Dead Rise too as for horror.

So if there’s a through-line between all of these it would be character-driven/theme focused screenplays that might swim for the dances ambition wise and with its genre but never lets loose of what’s truly important-Characters you care for and a message you want to pass on to the audience, because otherwise that’s just plot you’re spouting out.

Stories are there to teach us something, to let us know something new, not just kill time.

Welcome to the community, Jan Gritsenko. Spielberg, Nolan, and Peele are three of my favorite directors. How's London so far?

Jan Gritsenko

Incredible!

Couldn’t have asked for a better place to be in for a film lover and artist at heart!

Finally a place that can feed my desire and hunger for all of that.

Kamil Murat

Hi Jan, keep inspired and start writing not long messages but scripts. Not ready for spec then write shorts. Only gathering ideas in mind without writing is for reluctant writers.

Maurice Vaughan

Cool, Jan Gritsenko. London is a beautiful city. I didn't know it was a place for film lovers. Well, the "007" movies of course.

Maurice Vaughan Maurice, London. OMG.

Jan Gritsenko thanks Jan. And thanks for answering my questions. That is the best approach to writing a screenplay. Never start before you are ready, and wait for that time when you just can’t hold on to it anymore and have to start writing. Keep us posted on your progress.
