Financing / Crowdfunding : Funding a national PSA by Ryan Haneman

Funding a national PSA

Hey Stage 32 siblings, I’ve hit a few walls trying to get funding for our PSA. It’s a PSA that several organizations have loved, but a lot of the organizations that we have created this message about impaired driving don’t have the advertising funds to create new content. We have been trying for over a month to get funding and we have managed to raise nothing. I’m wondering if anyone here could suggest other organizations that do this and may have funding, or private investors, we will be trying crowdfunding so if any one has a favourite we would love to hear what you did. I have a few other ideas of organizations but I’m looking for more. Any help or advise would be lovely thank you,

Eugene Mandelcorn

Our studio will be funding several projects using crowdfunding. What is your budget? How long will the PSA be? It seems strange that the organizations that it would benefit don't have funding for it. Usually, they would be the source of funding and would come to you to do the PSA for them.

I would suggest either pitch to the police or government bureau that normally deals with health and safety. I’m not sure where you’re based but in the U.K. we have a dedicated branch that deals with roads safety and make adverts, they’re called Think! So it may be worth seeing if you have something like that or a road safety week or something and pitch with that in mind.

Thank you Eugene and Emma.for commenting and for the advice. I’m based in Canada to answer Emma, I was looking at both government and I will be looking to the police, the government has a grant that they gave to multiple organizations and I’ve been trying to figure out which ones. I’ve been in touch with two, and one said that our PSA is great but not on brand with their PSAs as they keep them more whimsical, but they did like our idea, so much so that they said they would be open to a collaboration with our team in the future. I haven’t tried the police yet so that was a solid suggestion.

To reply to Eugene my budget is $50,000 Canadian, and they length is one minute for internet, 30 seconds for TV, and also 10 seconds also for the internet, plus print adds for transit stops, and billboards.we have been in touch with MADD and they approved the concept but have no budget to make the add and rely on independent filmmakers such as ourselves to give them adds, then the budget they have is for buying air play and printing. What other organizations would you suggest? We tried BCAA, but we haven’t reached out to AAA or CAA as of yet. We’re not tied to just pitching in Canada. But we were perplexed as well that these agencies don’t have the funds to make the adds just to distribute them after they are made. That’s why I was looking to suggestions.

I appreciate the time you both took to comment. As I said I’m open to ideas.

Good luck with the funding Ryan I hope that you come right

Sorry I can’t help more with Canadian stuff. I would definitely add the good comments to your pitch deck though. It may be worth having a Google of previous similar campaigns and seeing who ran them or created the ads so that you can contact them to either pitch or ask if they know of any government bodies/private investors that would fund your project.

Good luck, and I hope it gets made coz good PSA advert save lives

Hi Ryan Haneman - while there are differences between documentaries and PSA's, I recommend this Stage 32 webinar on how to partner with brands to make your documentary. I think there are valuable actionable steps in here that could be helpful: https://www.stage32.com/webinars/How-You-Can-Partner-With-Brands-To-Make...

OK. I'm in Canada also. If you have a partnership with a NPO (non-profit organization), you could look for government subsidies for NPO (gov, foundations, etc), even if it's the NPO's job. The security organizations, like the police is a good start. You can also look for businesses who wants to invest into that project - like-minded businesses, or if the NPO is in, some businesses are in to invest in NPOs projects. There's also crowdfunding and GoFundMe, but as far as I know, it's not the best way for a 50 grand.
