Introduce Yourself : re: REY PARLA * Independent Filmmaker - Brooklyn, NY by Rey Parla

Hello Everyone! New to Stage32. Currently, I am in the 1-Year Directing Program at The Barrow Group in Manhattan. My focus now is storytelling in theater and filmmaking. In 1998 I co-wrote and co-produced a short film in Miami that got me quite a few jobs after studying filmmaking in Miami Beach with Sergio Giral and Acting with Joshua Braun, Stuart Solomon, Playwright Bobby Bell, Maria Teresa Rojas of the MDC Prometeo Theater Group and being in a few plays in Orlando. The short eventually landed me a scholarship at the IFP NY for 12 weeks and through a lot of hustle with the help of NALIP (National Association of Latino Independent Producers) I got a lead for an Associate Documentary Producer job with a company affiliated with WNET Channel 13 also in NYC. 9/11 changed all our lives and a year after I returned home to Miami to finish my B.A. in English Lit and a Certificate in Film Studies at Florida International University (FIU). I then completed a second B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies with FIU. While at school I continued to create and produce art, experimental films, co-writing experimental theater, and many other projects, which led to a one-month grand tour in China in 2008 with artists' friends to produce a documentary of the journey and several exhibitions with published catalogs of the works exhibited. At that time, I co-founded parlastudios.com and continued to collaborate on creating and producing exhibitions, large-scale installations, and short-form art-oriented documentaries with my brother Jose and friends, amongst many other projects.

I am also now in the NYU Film and TV Industry Essentials Course - Yellowbrick online and want to focus on screenwriting.
