Please join us for the Zoom table read of a script by Tom Lough, a Stage 32 member, on Wednesday evening, February 7.
Tom is a member of Veterans in Media and Entertainment (VME) organization and recently won a screenwriting fellowship from the Writers Guild Foundation in Los Angeles.
During the fellowship, he developed a script for a feature film inspired by the story of Helen Preece, who trained for the 1912 Olympic Games in modern pentathlon but was denied entry because she was a woman. Tom competed in the modern pentathlon in the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico, so, as an Olympian, he knew that Helen’s story had to be told and that he was the one to tell it!
“Go for the Five” is the fictionalized story of Millie Parker, a headstrong but talented teenage equestrienne in early 1900s London who trains in riding for the 1912 Games but discovers that the event is for men only. Then she learns of a new Olympic event for 1912, the modern pentathlon. She can already ride, but has to learn to fence, shoot, swim, and run quickly so she can enter the Olympic trials. Even though her Olympic dream eludes her, she shows everyone (and herself) what she is made of.
