Anything Goes : Do we need a preprepared script?? by Kasey Hill

Do we need a preprepared script??

So I am an author. In one of my series, I am currently converting book 1 to the proper format of a screenplay. I have scripted out book one, but it is not entirely formatted per screenplay rules. My main question is, do I need to do this with all of my books to pitch? Do we HAVE to have a screenplay? And like for my five-book series (more to come in that book-wise), do I need to have the entire series screenplayed out or is book one fine? I know that to enter contests, they need to be screenplays, but is it the same for pitching?

Hi, Kasey Hill. I haven't pitched a book on Stage 32, but someone at success@stage32.com should be able to answer your questions.

Hi Kasey, I hope everything is going well.

To participate in any contest for producing film content, whether it's a movie or a series, you must have a screenplay in the universal screenplay format that can be read by interested parties. In other words, having a screenplay is mandatory.

If you have a series written in books and you want to adapt it for a film or TV series, you need to keep in mind that you must rewrite and organize it into the appropriate audiovisual screenplay format. Additionally, if it's a series, you need a story arc map – meaning, how each chapter relates to one another, along with a general plot of the story.

I suggest you look for a screenwriter who can help you.

All the best with your books and projects, dear.

In case anyone comes across this, I emailed support like recommended and this was their answer

Hey Kasey,

Great questions! As an author looking to expand into screenwriting, you're actually in a strong position - having a completed book series gives you substantial source material and proves you can execute long-form storytelling.

Do you need screenplays to pitch? It depends on what you're pitching and to whom:

For TV series development: You typically need a pilot script plus a series bible/treatment outlining future episodes/seasons

For feature film adaptation: You need a completed screenplay

For selling adaptation rights: Sometimes a strong treatment or pitch deck can work, but most executives want to see the actual screenplay. It all starts with a pitch though... which can buy you time in the interim as you make your conversion.

How much do you need to convert?

Start with Book 1 as a polished, properly formatted screenplay - this is your calling card

Create a series bible that outlines the remaining books/seasons with detailed episode breakdowns

Don't convert everything upfront - that's a massive time investment that may not be necessary

Strategic approach: Since you have source material advantage, I'd recommend:

Perfect the Book 1 screenplay with proper formatting

Develop a compelling series treatment covering your 5-book arc

Pitch this as a limited series or multi-season show

Stage 32 opportunities: Many of our executives work in book-to-screen adaptations. You might want to connect with our Literary agents who specialize in media rights, like Joe Haar at IPLG Literary or Allegra Craver at Sugar 23.

What genre is your series? That might help me point you toward the most relevant executives and opportunities.

Best,
