‘House Of The Dragon’s Milly Alcock Questioned Her Acting Abilities After A Higher-Up Told Her She Was Getting An Acting Coach After One Day On Set

Talk about adding pressure to an acting gig!

““On my second day on House of the Dragon, one of the — I’m not gonna say who, but someone very high up — pulled me aside and was like, ‘Um, we’re gonna get you an acting coach,’” Alcock said on the late-night show.”

Has anything like this happened to you? How would you address facing negativity on the film set?

Geoff Hall Hi! as an actress late to the game and acting coach I tend to agree with what others have said. There is always something new to learn unless you are very experienced. So I would embrace the opportunity to learn. That said o can see how my inner critic might take it as ammunition to criticise me. I guess it’s about building the resilience to be able to take the feedback as just that rather than as an attack on one’s worth. Interestingly I just over at the blog section reading an article by Rebecca Reaney that talks about the critical voice. Here is is Dear Actors, You Are Enough

Alexandra Stevens Hi Alex, I can understand Milly's shock at someone telling her that. She's got the gig and on her first day, the anonymous person doesn't offer their help, but that she should seek the services of an acting coach. That for me wasn't advice but a put down. For sure, we all need help at times in our various crafts, but this to me sounded like someone wanted to put her in her place.

I'll take a look at blog post and report back here! Thanks for your comment.

I agree with Geoff Hall It does read to me more of a power trip by the person who said it then it was meant to be helpful. Milly booked the job. She deserved to be there. I wonder what the age and gender of the higher up who said this to her was. Also, I doubt they were even an actor as by higher up I think of studio executive who knows nothing about acting or creative vision etc. I took it as an insult, this person was being condescending because of Milly's age and gender. I am willing to stake $1 on that the higher up was a man, and would not have said anything to a male actor.

Geoff Hall

Suzanne Bronson ah, Suzanne, there’s a tell-tale slip of the gender revelation of the higher up. There’s one point in the article where it mentions “she”, so I took it that it was a woman who was an actor of some status.

Alexandra Stevens

Geoff Hall you make a good point. Being new to the industry I guess I naivelyhadn't considered the extent of power dynamics at play.

Alexandra Stevens

Suzanne Bronson I appreciate your point of view especially as you have lots of industry experience. Hmmm....I wonder who the 'higher up' was

Suzanne Bronson

Well then Geoff -I believe the term is "peacocking" ha ha Clearly someone feeling insecure.

Ashley Renée Smith

Geoff Hall I thought Milly Alcock was incredible in House of the Dragon. She brought so much depth and nuance to young Rhaenyra. Honestly, I was gutted when they time-jumped. Her performance was one of the most compelling parts of those early episodes.

It’s disheartening to hear how early doubt was placed on her shoulders. That kind of pressure, especially from someone in a high position, can shake even the most experienced actor’s confidence.

Geoff Hall

Ashley Renée Smith that’s good to hear, Ashley, about her stunning performance. I’m glad to hear that it didn’t seem to knock her confidence. Here’s to her resilience in the face of criticism.
