To do or not to do extra work?! Basically is it worth doing extra work for the money /experience if you want to be getting lead and supporting roles in film and television or is it a waste of time?!

I would say go for it, actors need money to survive and what better job than one where you can network with people in the business.
Go for it - networking, you never know who you are going to meet or influence.
