Producing : Co-production by Haythem Ameur

Co-production

Hi everyone,

I have a question for the Stage 32 community. Are there truly professional project proposals here — for example, from established production companies or internationally recognized projects — or is it mainly smaller, independent/entry-level productions?

I’m asking because, at the moment, I’m producing a short documentary, a short film with potential distribution on Netflix and Arte, and a feature film aimed at major festivals such as Berlinale, Venice, and Cannes. I’m particularly interested in opportunities for shooting in Algeria, or co-productions with well-known companies, as well as connecting with talented directors and crew members I could bring to work on projects here.

This isn’t meant to diminish the value of anyone’s work — I respect all projects — but Algeria has a growing industry that generates significant revenue, and I’d like to build strong, professional contacts for future collaborations.

Best regards,

Haythem

Haythem Ameur To answer your questions: 1. Professional production companies of any level don't put project proposals out into public space. They don't pitch through social media, period. And they do not pitch to anyone who they don't already know on some level (as a rule). That's one reason you don't see such things here. When you see people crewing up etc. it is because the project is already moving forward. If someone is pitching here to the public, well... not recommended for legal reasons and for protection of IP. 2. When you say you have "potential distribution" with Netflix et al, it implies you have spoken directly with them and they are considering your project specifically. 3. Coproductions are normal, no one takes offense that you want to shoot somewhere specific. The questions to be answered are: what level of skills can Algerian crews demonstrate, what local locations and infrastructure are there to support the particular production, what are the local laws and culture, what are the economic incentives... for a start. Also what finances is the local coproducers putting into the production?

Shadow Dragu-Mihai ,

Thank you for your detailed answer — I understand and agree that professional production companies generally don’t put proposals in public spaces, and that many conversations happen behind closed doors for IP and legal protection.

However, I’d like to clarify my point: I’m not suggesting that projects should be posted publicly, but rather that platforms like Stage 32 could also be a place to connect with producers, directors, and technicians we might develop projects with later.

For context, we’ve already been involved in co-productions with African and European countries, many of which started from initial professional connections on platforms such as Crew United or LinkedIn. Algeria is not unknown in the international industry — our crews have worked on large-scale productions, from DJ Snake’s music videos to French features and documentaries like L’Algérie vue du ciel.

The Algerian government invests significantly in cinema and has a long-term vision to build a robust industry by 2030–2040, with real budgets and infrastructure to support international co-productions. We have diverse locations, competitive costs, experienced crews, and a growing network of technical resources — all of which make Algeria a very attractive filming destination.

My aim here is simply to build relationships with potential partners, regardless of whether the initial conversation comes from North America, South America, Europe, or elsewhere, so that when the right project comes along, the connection is already established.

Best regards,

Haythem

Hi Haythem,

Great question! Stage 32 actually hosts a diverse mix of opportunities across all production levels. While you'll find plenty of independent and emerging producers (which is valuable for building relationships), there are definitely established production companies, international co-productions, and festival-level projects on the platform as well.

A few suggestions for maximizing your experience here:

Check out the Open Writing Assignments (OWAs) and Project Opportunities sections regularly - these often include opportunities from established production companies

Use the advanced search filters to target companies and professionals working at your level

The Executive Portal connects you directly with industry decision-makers, including those involved in international co-productions

For Algeria-specific opportunities:

Post in the Lounge about your Algeria shooting locations and co-production interests - you might be surprised by the responses

Connect with the international filmmaking community here - many members are actively seeking unique locations and cross-cultural collaborations

Consider the Stage 32 Meetups and Happy Writers events for networking

The platform's strength is really in its global reach and the ability to filter for exactly what you're looking for. Given Algeria's growing film industry, you're positioned to offer something many producers are actively seeking.

Hope this helps, and looking forward to seeing your projects develop!
