Screenwriting : Book Adaptations by Scott Harper

Scott Harper

Book Adaptations

I’ve been writing seriously since 1993. There has been interest several times in turning various books that I’ve written into films. Each time, the project has fallen apart. I’ve joined Stage 32 seeking representation to help make such an adaptation happen.

Can anyone here help me out?

Hi Scott Harper - congrats on your books and the interest they've garnered. If you have the screenplays already, you should take advantage of the Script Coverage services here and/or start pitching them to managers/agent through the Pitching opportunities. If you have just the books so far, you can post on the Jobs board that you're looking for someone to write an adaptation of your books. You can offer whatever you want, including deferred pay, all up to you and whoever is interested to figure out.

Lemme know if I misunderstood your search. cheers

Minimizing the cost is a popular advice to maximize the probability that a story will be filmed.

Hi Scott Harper - have you already adapted your novels into screenplays? If not, do come and have a chat sometime.

Scott Harper

Sebastian Tudores - I haven't written the adaptations myself yet, no. I have the knowledge and skill to do so, but haven't written them. Can you please explain to me how the deferred pay would work? This is new territory to me.

Pat Alexander

Hey Scott Harper Stage 32 offers Adaptation Reviews specifically for this purpose, so authors can get a clear look whether or not their books would be viable as films or series, as adaptations are a very common practice in the entertainment industry. Check it out here: https://www.stage32.com/scriptservices/coverage/buy?id=66

Hi Scott Harper - 'deferred pay' sounds fancier than it actually is - all it mean is that you agree together with the other party that payment to other party is deferred/delayed until a specific date or point in the process (i.e., when money comes in). Useful when there's no cash to start anything and you find a willing party whose circumstance/timing/interest similarly aligns. BUT - if you have some 'startup' cash to invest, then please do yourself the practical favor to check out Pat Alexander 's link and just jump in with both feet on moving this forward WITH industry feedback - since this IS where you want the project to end up anyway, take advantage of the access provided here on Stage32 and cut your timeline considerably - IS it, or is it NOT a viable project? What IS the best way forward? Important questions you want answers to as early in the process as possible. :)

Pat Alexander - That sounds great. I simply don't have the money to invest in the call right now. Maybe down the road sometime. I've bookmarked that page to make sure that I don't lose it. Thank you for bringing that to my attention!

Scott Harper One thing that really helps is having your book adapted into a proper screenplay — either by you (if you’re interested in learning the format) or by working with a screenwriter who can bring it to life on the page. Producers almost always want to see a script since that’s the actual blueprint for film/TV.

That said, books do get optioned even without huge sales, especially if the concept feels cinematic or unique. Of course, strong sales or a big following make it easier.
