Here’s how to make your characters’ emotions leap off the page.

Don’t write:

> John is angry.

Instead write:

John’s jaw tightens. His fist curls against the table.

Don’t write:

> Sarah is sad.

Instead write:

Sarah’s smile falters, her eyes glassy with what she won’t say.

Don’t write:

> Mike is nervous.

Instead write:

Mike’s leg bounces under the table, sweat darkening his collar.

Don’t write:

> Emma is happy.

Instead write:

Emma’s laughter bursts, uncontainable, filling the room with light.

Don’t write:

> The boy is scared.

Instead write:

The boy shrinks back, clutching his toy as shadows crowd the wall.
