Screenwriting : Why me , why now. by Marie Hatten

Marie Hatten

Why me , why now.

In 2010 during my first trip to Sydney a chance encounter sparked the inspiration for a feature script. It was my "too hard basket" idea, the one I'd write after I broke into the industry. Years later after writing a first draft set in the 1840's Sydney (a nonlinear convict story) I heard myself pitching the idea to my physio and realized how flat it sounded. Then came the true spark, an idea in the middle of the night that wouldn't be ignored; a parallel narrative, two couples both in 1840's and present day Sydney. After lengthy and ongoing research into intimate partner violence and coercive control my why has changed. Globally every ten minutes a woman or girl is killed by an intimate partner or family member. Violence against women. children and companion animals (often used by perpetrators to control victims) is a global emergency. Why now? The rise in online misogyny , digital harassment, deepfakes , outdated ideas of masculinity resulting in poorer mental health and high rates of suicide amongst men...

Your script sounds intriguing, Marie Hatten! That's a fantastic "why me, why now"! We need more stories that shine a light on those things!

Michael Thorn

>a parallel narrative, two couples both in 1840's and present day Sydney -

coupled with your theme, I can see this working really well - good luck with pitching Marie

Robin Gregory

Kudos for taking up a very difficult subject, Marie Hatten . It sounds intriguing. wishing you well in the pitching game.

Aparna Pasalkar

Hey, your subject is very hard hitting,in India crime against women by intimate partners/husbands is on a rise and contributes approx 32% of total crimes reported , the narrative style of parallel stories (1840 & present day) may make it an interesting watch.... best of luck for your pitching, hope you make it.

Love the true spark in the middle of the night. One never knows when inspiration will hit, usually at the most unlikely, unguarded times. Congratulations on your breakthrough.
