Your Stage : The Emergency Room by Matthew Wach

The Emergency Room

Victer was a good person with a heart of gold — the kind of man who could brighten an entire galaxy with just one star. He had been dismissed by society his entire life, yet he never demanded acceptance or asked for handouts. He was strong-willed, and above all, he loved making people happy.

One night, Victer was spending time with his family. They were eating dinner together — something a relative had cooked.

“Yum!! This chicken is incredible!!” he said enthusiastically.

In truth, it was absolutely disgusting. But that didn’t matter to Victer. What mattered was the smile it brought to someone else’s face.

The following morning, his relatives started an argument over spilled milk. Something small. Something meaningless. But it pushed Victer past his limits. No one ever seemed to appreciate his love or affection. Instead, he was labeled unstable, told he was “too much,” again and again.

He tried to defuse the situation. It backfired.

So Victer did what he believed was best for everyone — he left.

He drove to the emergency room, intending to sign himself into a psychiatric unit. As he approached the entrance, he noticed an elderly woman struggling to walk alongside a family member.

Victer stopped.

Mid-step, he froze.

He glanced at the ER doors… then back at the two people.

“Excuse me, sir,” Victer said gently. “My name is Victer. I don’t mean to be rude, but would you like me to wait here with her while you get the car?”

The man turned around, tears welling in his eyes.

“Would you mind?” he asked. “She struggles with walking long distances.”

Victer smiled — wide, sincere, unguarded.

“Of course I wouldn’t mind,” he said. “I’d love to help.”

The man thanked him profusely before heading to retrieve the car. When he returned, Victer stepped aside and simply said, “I hope you feel better, ma’am.”

Then he turned… and continued his journey through the doors of “The Emergency Room”
