I was always aware of lighting, studying about light source in art school how lighting cast shadows in a composition or an object. Years later, I started to think about it more, looking at photos, watching films and seeing illustrations/paintings, how it is utilized in a shot or in a panel. A person I knew in the comic book industry made me think about lighting, how to utilize lighting in sequential art, study film and the work of cinematographers.
When I did this illustration/backdrop for a job, I used reference photos from the 1930s and 1940s to capture an atmospheric quality with the work, combining tone/mood through layout/design/color placement. Hanging out with some top pros in the comic book and media industries, I learned that lighting is such a strong and vital component in not only film, but in illustration and visual composition/design.
As I illustrate storyboards and concept art for filmmakers, I try to indicate lighting in my work, placing light sources in key parts of frame to be a component of the story along with adding drama and mood to the work. Have a great night, everyone!

Great ideas, Rich Terdoslavich! I don't have final say about lighting, but thinking about lighting helps me visualize and write scripts.

Thanks, Maurice! Just a few ideas to write about. There’s more to write about and if I had more time, would go more into details. Will probably do that in the near future. Lighting, along with design/composition/framing and color palette/b&w aesthetic are all key parts of visual staling with a great script and sound design/editing too.
You're welcome, Rich Terdoslavich. Great. Looking forward to the posts!
