Acting : Performing Absolute Loneliness by Amir Sadeghi

Performing Absolute Loneliness

How would you portray loneliness when you are the only conscious being in existence?

Curious how actors approach emotional scale in high-concept roles.

Maurice Vaughan

Maybe show the character doing things alone and sad, Amir Sadeghi.

Suzanne Bronson

I would need more information Amir Sadeghi Is there a storyline? Am I the only character? Is the scene only me? There is a difference between being alone and feeling lonely. It is possible to be surrounded by people and still feel lonely. Also, I think you misunderstand what acting is. We don't portray a feeling, we feel the feeling. Acting is being. Acting is living truthfully in imaginary circumstances. Doing activities to show this character is lonely is not the same as feeling lonely. Why does this character feel lonely? The more information the writer provides the easier for the actor.

Amir Sadeghi

That makes sense, Maurice Vaughan .

Simple actions alone can say a lot.

But in this case, it’s even deeper —

not just doing things alone…

It’s being the only consciousness that exists.

So maybe the loneliness isn’t sadness.

Maybe it’s something more cosmic.

Almost beyond human emotion.

Amir Sadeghi

really like the behavioral detail you described, Cat Fields

Those small rituals —

checking the phone, pouring a drink, turning the TV off —

they feel very human.

For a human character, that works beautifully.

But here I’m wondering…

What does loneliness look like

before humanity even exists?

That scale fascinates me.

Amir Sadeghi

That’s a great point, Suzanne Bronson

You’re absolutely right —

acting isn’t portraying a feeling, it’s living it.

In this case, the character would be the only conscious being in existence.

No other reference point. No memory of “togetherness.”

So the question becomes —

Can someone feel lonely

if they’ve never known connection?

That’s what I’m exploring.

And you’re right —

the clearer the inner reason,

the more truthful the performance.

Suzanne Bronson

Absolutely you can be lonely if you have never known connection. That is in our DNA. Think of how they cuddle babies in the NICU. Even animals need connection with each other. Punch the monkey is a good example.

Haley Mary

I would have the character doing something alone. That could be cooking, shopping, walking their dog (if they have a pet), etc. I'd also have the character doing something artistic alone, could be painting, playing an instrument such as some melancholy music on a piano. I'm also thinking what if the character isn't the only human being in the world, but is the only conscious being, like smartphones has turned everyone into "zombies" just scrolling and the one human being is feeling alone in the world looking at all these "zombies" on their phones while they are sitting in a cafeteria, break room, etc feeling alone despite being surrounded by people.
