Staying Consistent as Writers

I’ve been thinking a lot about momentum lately — how small daily progress adds up over time.

What helps you stay consistent with your writing when motivation dips?

Jason Howell

It can be hard to stay consistent, especially when life gets in the way. Sometimes, even when the desire is there, you just can’t write as often as you’d like.

For me, my screenwriting program is almost always open with two or three priority projects up. I tinker with what I can, when I can. But there are days when I get stuck, or days when I simply don’t have the time I wish I had.

And sometimes, you really do need a break. The important thing is making sure a break stays a break, not a full stop.

When I’m struggling to keep momentum on a particular project, I usually do one of two things: either jump to another script I’m more motivated to work on, or go back and re‑read one of my drafts. Both help me reconnect with the work without forcing it.

I have the same issue. I try to write even a tiny bit, or just make one punctuation correction, if I can't hit my daily page goal. I rather like the motivational art done by TheShunBun which comes with uplifting messages about life and art, and they're finally starting to sink in lol
