What today’s audiences actually want from a Psychological Thriller?

Something interesting is happening with the thriller genre.

For many years, thrillers relied heavily on shock value. You know, the likes of jump scares, sudden violence and plot twists designed to surprise audiences.

But today’s viewers seem to be gravitating toward something different.

The mind-bending thriller.

Stories where:

• perception is unreliable

• protagonists are morally ambiguous

• tension comes from psychology rather than visual display of action

• audiences actively interpret the narrative

Streaming culture has also accelerated this shift.

Binge viewing encourages layered storytelling and mysteries that unfold gradually.

Viewers now enjoy analysing scenes, debating interpretations and revisiting stories to uncover hidden meaning.

I recently wrote a deeper exploration of this shift in audience psychology.

Curious to hear your thoughts as producers:

Do you think audiences now prefer psychological tension over traditional thriller mechanics?

For me personally, the audience wants a good quality story that doesn't feel crammed, rushed, or safe. They want good rounded characters with relatability and multidimensionality, so they're feel develop and memorable.
