yes, my characters will pour out of me through dialogue and I’ll write it down without understanding it and then at the right time, they show me what it all meant. they’re always 2 steps ahead of me.

Charles Dickens kept a mirror on the wall near his writing desk and when he'd create his (timeless) characters, he'd stand in front of the mirror and make faces and try out dialog there in imitation of the character forming in his mind.
