Anything Goes : Happy May the Fourth! by Frank Wu

Happy May the Fourth!

And May the Fourth be with you. (And also with you.)

What's your favorite Star Wars character - and WHY? The WHY Is the interesting part.

I suspect a lot of people will pick the heroes - Luke, Leia, Han, Rey, Finn, Poe.  Or maybe the villains - Darth Vader (truly one of the all-time great cinematic characters), or one of the other Darths (Maul, Sidious, etc.). Anyone for Kylo Ren? Who's your favorite - and WHY? And what can we learn from this as we make our own characters?

[A related, opposite question is: Who is your LEAST favorite Star Wars character? Again, the WHY is the interesting part. Was it bad design work? Bad voice acting? A poorly-defined personality? Uhhhh... racism? Inconsistencies from movie to movie? WHY did this character not work for you? And again - WHAT can we learn from this as we create our own?]

My favorites I must admit are the weird aliens. The really weird, not-a-dude-in-a-rubber-mask aliens. These for me make the Star Wars universe feel like a real place.

So I must admit that my favorite characters in Star Wars are:

-The garbage masher monster, called the Dianoga (or sometimes Dianogu). It's like someone coming back from Florida with a baby alligator (it's so cute!) and then it grows up to be a deadly, horrible monster so it gets flushed down the drain. And that's how you end up with Dianogas in your garbage mashers.

My other favorite is...

-The giant space slug, called the Exogorth (originally called the Exorgorth). It just sits around hibernating inside an asteroid, eating rocks (?). Like the Japanese beetle larvae lying curled up in the dirt under my lawn, waiting for spring. OMG - If the space slug is a larva, what is it going to metamorph into?

One of my goals in writing is creating aliens and live within a believable, self-consistent universe.

Oh yeah, I love me some aliens!
