Screenwriting : My ritual before writing by Florencia Provost

My ritual before writing

I want to share with you a tip that I use when I write. One of my most important rituals is music. Before I start writing, I always play a special playlist I have for those moments of creation. I think it’s a great way to start writing, especially if the music is set in the same time period as the story. For example, if your story is set in the 1980s, you can play music from that era.

The important thing is that the music can transport you to the time period you are writing about or evoke the emotion of the scene. For example, if you are writing a romance, it’s ideal to have romantic or love-related music playing in the background. This helps potentiate creativity and allows you to feel the emotions your characters are experiencing, creating a deeper connection with the story you are writing.

Personally, I don't have any specific writing ritual; I sit down at the beginning of the script I want to write and follow the steps. Of course, I sometimes put classical music on in the background to help me focus, but I prefer music that is as calm as possible, solely for the purpose of clarifying my thoughts. I completely agree with you that every writer has a unique writing style; it may involve a ritual or something else, but it exists. I also like listening to powerful songs in the background while thinking about stories. And while writing, I sometimes pause to play chess; this is also part of my writing style.

Muhammed Korkusuz That's great! Like I said every person has its own ritual and process to create. If that is your process and it helps you, that's what matters :)
