Screenwriting : Any Music While you Write? by Patrick Koepke

Any Music While you Write?

I'm curious if anyone else listens to music while they write? I always listen to ambient or instrumental music that fits the tone of whatever project I'm writing. For example, when I wrote my Wuxia epic, it was all Chinese flute music the whole time. My current story is set in Mississippi, so I've been listening to delta blues.

I find it keeps me in the zone.

Totally relate Patrick Koepke! I always listen to music while I work. I listen to pop songs and sometimes lo-fi music. It also keeps me focused :) If you need personalized help or advice for your project, don't hesitate to reach out at success@stage32.com

Chinese flute music is a whole vibe! I can't imagine listening to it nonstop for months while writing a project but I dig the commitment. I like listening to uptempo music while I write to get the juices flowing!

Jaz Lagrimas Thank you. Lo-fi is good too; keeps my fingers typing.

Pat Alexander I typically find YouTube channels that have "4 hours of" musical genres, so it does have some variation, so it is sort of like listening to the project's future score as you write it. Uptempo is always good too, especially for action scripts..

Maurice Vaughan

I mainly outline scripts without music, @Patrick, but I listen to instrumentals, songs, and soundtracks that match the genre(s).

Banafsheh Esmailzadeh

I always need music when I write, and the genre doesn't matter (though probably most often I'll listen to something without vocals to minimise distraction). Right now the music I'm listening to is "Booyah" by Showtek even though it doesn't fit the vibe of the story at all lol (or maybe it does, if you like meta)

Christopher Wells

It's great way to tap into a mood.

Mike O'Neill

Patrick Koepke Yes, almost always. Nothing fancy, just one of my iTunes playlists which is a mix of alternative and rock from the 80's to the present.

Paulinus Patrick

Would you like me to recommend a music that will lift up your spirit while writing?

Dodi Hochez

That's interesting because while I DO listen to music while writing, I find it occasionally distracts me. I't alsmost as if Im inspired and yet contemplative of what I hear. Hard to say if it's a good or bad thing.

Glenn Powell

Most of the time. However, I find listening to music inspires ideas. I can visual whole scenes but the music. Music can be so powerful in creating emotions.

Conversely, old black and white movies with no sound and just acting are fabulous.

However, I definitely write to music most of the time.

Monica Madison

All the time. I listen to mostly instrumentals or something that my music friends will put together for me. I came across a newly released Prince song, "With These Tears" and its on constant repeat and helped me get through Act 1.
