hi everyone, romel here. a screenwriter and creative based in columbus, ga. most of my work lives at the intersection of memory, identity, and the strange little corners of queerness that don’t usually get invited into the room.
i create stories that break the molded narrative of what it means to be gay in an ever‑changing society. most gay films in hollywood feel like commercial, sanded‑down versions of us; the “safe” slice of the spectrum. i’m more interested in the niche, the absurd, the gauche, the boys and men who get discarded or discredited because their personalities are too eccentric, too esoteric, too much.
& i’m one of them, so it’s only natural i write from that space. my projects don’t cater to the norm, but they still carry the undercurrent of deep human emotion we all feel.
the town crier is a family drama about grief, looming hallucination, southern chaos, and the patterns we inherit without realizing it.
the masculinity matrix is lighter in tone, but still digs into the hard stuff: desire, conditioning, and the strange ways queer boys learn to measure themselves against a system that was never built for them.
as someone who never went to school for film writing, i’ve had to teach myself everything. i consider myself a “notes‑app protégé”- scrappy, self‑taught, and still learning every day. connecting with the right community is the next step for me, and that’s why i’m here.
i’m looking to meet writers, directors, and development‑minded folks who care about character‑driven stories with heart, humor, and a little bit of chaos. if you’re into building worlds that feel lived‑in and emotionally honest, i’d love to connect.
Welcome. I think that we need more realistic projects regarding people, male and female, who are homosexuals. I look forward to being able to read your work when it is ready for exhibition.
Welcome to Stage 32, Romel Simmons - I think you'll really enjoy your experience here.
Welcome to the community, Romel! I haven't had much film education either aside from drama and theater classes in high school as well as film 100 and theater 100 at university. I've also learnt so much just by reading all the blogs every week.
