I’m currently developing an original sci-fi feature screenplay, and I’ve been thinking about what makes a sci-fi story stand out from the usual superhero/superpower concepts.
I’m interested in creating something grounded, emotional, and character-driven rather than relying only on spectacle.
For writers and filmmakers here: what makes a sci-fi concept feel genuinely fresh to you?

For me, fresh sci-fi starts with a strong human question rather than the technology itself. The best concepts make you care about the characters first, then use the sci-fi element to put them in situations we couldn’t explore in an ordinary story.

I really like that perspective. It makes me think that the sci-fi element should challenge the character emotionally, not just visually. In your opinion, is it stronger when the sci-fi concept directly comes from the character’s personal fear or conflict?
Hi Tayyar! I love the direction you’re taking with your sci-fi feature. Grounded, emotional, character-driven sci-fi can really stand out when the world and concept are serving the story.
