I studied with a hollywood type who though not well know outside of certain circles has been a part of over 70 films and worked with some very big names before they were big. The best advice he gave me was this, "Writers write. Thinkers Think." If you want to be good at something you actually have to do it. If you want to be really good at it do it everyday. It applies to writing, cinematography, acting, etc. So to that end everyday I try to write something as well as either film something or take some still shots.
