Ok, so I love musical theatre and as a developing playwright this is one genre that "scares" me. However, I have a really cool and unique idea that would make a cool show, but I have no idea where to start. How do I develop my ideas? What's a formula that's worked for you? I'm kinda geeked cause this concept is hilaarious in my brain, but I want to see if manifest. Help...

Outlining usually works best for me. I start with my character breakdowns(100 questions to get the feel for my characters), setting, story-lines you know, the basics. As far as music/lyrics, I can knock that out of the park somedays but then there are times I freeze up. My solution is taking a second to get in character. Don't focus to much on the chords/notes but instead look at the story behind the lyrics. Sometimes, I can just sit and write(don't worry about formatting). Write your ideas or scenes or just free write the script/story. Acting out scenes can help get things going to. Whatever idea you have for a few scenes, act it out a few times and be present in the scene. Just start by writing whether it is the music, lyrics or script but try not to do it all at once, taking one piece works best in my opinion. You don't want to overwhelm yourself working on book, lyrics and music all at once. Looking at other musicals/plays will help you out as well but find your own style and tell your story your way. Don't worry too much about what the critics are saying is 'in style' or not just do what you love :) Hope some of this helps you. Happy New Year
