Stepping up

im currently in acting class and im doing very good now i wanna take it to the next step where do i start?

Matthew Cornwell

Hopefully your teacher can help you with that. Is your teacher a working actor currently? Do they work in the same industry (theatre vs. film vs. commercials) that you aspire to? If so, ask them to meet you over coffee to discuss the next level. Otherwise, the most generic answer is you need experience auditioning in the real world, booking some projects on your own, and then getting an agent.

she doesnt act now she's done roles when she was younger she stopped to start a acting school. i love film. im a musician as well so im always in front of a camera. what woud be a great way to start like should i start by commercials or go straight for the big ones?

Next step is audition for roles.

Matthew Cornwell

You'll need an agent to get commercials or film roles. And most casting directors/agents won't just throw you into film untested. You'll need to "pay your dues" within the agency so that your agent will feel good submitting you for the bigger stuff. You will need patience, though. Lots and lots of patience. There are no short cuts in this industry, despite what you see on the internet and hear in those stupid radio commercials. It can be years before you book your first TV/film role. And there's no guarantee that once you book a role that the next role will come easy or quickly. After every gig you have to start over. That's the reality of this business that makes it so hard to sustain yourself.

Smh no one wants to tell you this so I am going to keep it 100 with you. Put in for every nonunion role that you would wanna play. Get a backstage account or if your pockets are broke just google. It will look like this for example free acting gigs in hell... Where ever you live. Switch up the words. You will send the ppl an email with a headshot and your little résumé. They will call you in to audition. You will either rock the audition or suck. They will say great job and not call you back. One day you will get sick off no call backs and tap into a passionate place that give you the confidence not to give a fuck. Cause your un-phased by all the no's... You will bloody hell book that mother fucker! Great feeling... And I hope you like my chef Ramsay impersonation. Remember be you... With emotion and I want a shout out when your accepting your award. Watch out for scams. Never pay to audition! Ever!

The value of an actor is their ability to put butts in the seats. If you feel you can do that then keep learning, develop your tools, headshots, demo, slate, resume, etc. and act as often as possible. Regional theatre is an awesome place to really learn about acting and what you have to do to connect with an audience. Independent film will give you the understanding you need to move to the professional film world. Agents and casting directors do not cast talent, that's a given.. They cast branding. What is it about you that will put butts in the seats? When you know that you are marketable. Until then you are in training.

Matt Milne

go and act, that's where you start. do little things, do big things, take it as it comes and where you want it to go, just go and do, be what you want to be.

Erin Reinhard

Get headshots done, put together a resume and start networking! Get to know people in the industry, audition every chance you get...student films, web series, etc...but be careful of scams.
