Emmett Kelly, Sr., for those old enough to remember, portrayed the world's most famous clown "Weary Willie." I married one of his two daughters and have been developing a play based on his life story for many years. I'm proud to say the play will debut in the spring of 2014 in his home town of Sarasota, FL. Our goal is a successful run in Sarasota, touring the show and eventually Broadway. What seemed impossible to me a few years ago is now very achievable with the support we're gathering. Stay tuned as we being the process of bringing my dream to fruition over the next year.
Congrats! I worked at the Asolo Theatre back in the late 70s and early 80s. I interviewed many vaudevillians living in Sarasota and got to know members of the Flying Wallenda family members. What a great project you're working on, and congrats again. I look forward to seeing it.
As a youth I remember Emmett being featured on several early TV programs. I remember being captivated by the charm of his character and the playful grace of his act. I send you all the best wishes and hopes I can for the success of your project. Emmett Kelly should live forever.
Thanks Paul for your kind words about Emmett. In the world today I believe there is a need for someone whose simple routines captivated audiences so much so that he is still an American icon. Very excited about this project and what it can lead to in bringing Emmett back into the public consciousness.
