HI rick, we do a lot of NY based production gigs from development to delivery. Feel free to give me a yell. we do projects for the networks, DOJ, Vet Admin, and a lot of the big banks... from features, docs, shorts, commercials whatever.

My day rate is $1500/ day but, I'm happy to do a favor for the band as long as they can convince my landlord, my insurance company, my equipment lease company, the power company, the telephone company, the internet company, and my team to let me have free service for as long as the free gig lasts.. Otherwise you have pay me for my services...
Well unless you know of a indie rock band that can afford to pay 1500 a day who work for peanuts because promoters and venues rip them off everyday. I was letting you know that that was the deal so the sarcasm and attitude is not appreciated.

Rick, I suggest you look into crowdfunding your project through Kickstarter or Indiegogo to generate funding. If you have some money, you can find a crew. What makes this band so special that you think someone else would want to watch a doc on them?
Hey Chris thanks for your idea but unfortunately I am on a time restraint. I think this bands story is like no other bands and I feel a lot of people from across the world will like their story. Also I am offering free trip to Austin Tx for the SXSW festival and other festivals that we will be playing. Also I will be submitting the work to every film festival from small to large at no cost to the film makers. So why it's not monetary unless of course the documentary started to make money it would be great exposure and free trips are not bad either
Rick , if its such an amazing story, why don't you fund the project so it can get made. BTW: you should post on your request that it's unfunded and that the work is unpaid. Some of us do this for a living. BTW: i'm not being sarcastic... if you honestly feel its a great project you can always find a way to fund it. I've done some spec work on projects that i believe in. But when I hire pros, I pay them.
I would fund it if I could but my money is being allocated to other resources. So we are looking for other ways and other avenues. People will be payed in other ways its just not monetary at this moment
'Paid'. Other ways? Are you doing landlord negotiations? There's nothing wrong with asking for volunteers, just be up front about it. Raise some money. Doing EPK for a band is along the lines of any other type of advertising, not a for the love narrative. As a band manager, you should know this. A couple of fans might do some interviews for free tickets and merch. Asking strangers in a supposedly professional forum with vague mentions of 'other compensation' is in rather poor taste. Just be honest.

As someone who would be interested if I lived in NYC I have a little advice; I respond much better to someone who says right up front that there is no pay and doesn't offer unstated perks like " People will be payed in other ways". Maybe others don't feel this way and you are getting a lot of replies to this. I do volunteer gigs when I'm not working and I know that a lot of camera guys do, too. For a non-paid gig the main reason for taking it is the people. Just thinking outloud. I might be out of line.
I did make a mistake by not putting it in ad I thought I did but asking for someone to do it without pay is not a bad thing especially when there work will be submitted into every festival there is. Also its like people asking actors to do their movie or show for free for the exposure it will bring due to the fact they have a small budget. Or having a band have their music on their soundtrack for no money but for exposure. Its not an EPK I am doing it is a documentary. So while I made the mistake of not saying right off the bat it was unpaid.

Exactly it, Parker. Documentaries are done on properties that people want to see (a friend of mine did one on The Replacements). For an 'up an coming' group, it's promotional, no matter how you want to slice it. Again, there's nothing wrong with that, its one way for a band to find a fan base. The error is trying to be slick about it when you have no cards. That raises hackles. The 'every festival there is' also plain just doesn't work - some have length restrictions, subject restrictions, don't do docs, only take animation, etc. That doesn't make the project look any more attractive - it makes you look like you haven't done any homework, and won't respect the work that you're not going to be paying for.
See well then it will be entered in every festival it is possible to be entered and there was no slickness being done. I put it up and when people contacted me I would tell them full details. It is about exposure for them and hopefully the person who decides to work on it. So you can believe what you want but all my intentions are good in everything I do. So that is my side and again you can think what you want
It isn't about what I think - its about presenting yourself (and in this case, your client) in the best way possible.
I am not as upset as Rachael seems to be. As a camera owner and shooter and occasional DP I just prefer to know up front what the gig is. That way if it seems like something I want to do or can do I will contact the person to ask for more info. But I see many notices like yours. Very little information up front and a contact to get more info. I don’t bother. I wonder if others feel the same way. To be honest entering festivals works for me. As long as I can really believe the movie will be entered in a LOT of festivals. I have lost track of freebees I have done and then find out they entered only the top five and couldn’t afford to enter any more. Again, I will work for free for the right person over perks and promises. I suspect I’m not alone in that. Just food for thought, Rick. All moot because I’m not in NY. Have you found the right person?
I understand where all are coming from. I made the ad in haste and probably should have given more information but it happened and that does not always make or break a project as I have seen many bad ads or rundown venues that turn out to be the best so I have learned to never judge a book by a cover. But thanks for all your help and ideas. We are still searching for the right candidate. Thanks for asking.
