Got it. I feel a bit stupid.
Don't feel stupid, a lot of people get major sticker shock when moving to the area. I knew a lady who eagerly accepted a raise from 25k to 35k to work from Indiana to the Westchester area. To her dismay, instead of buying a four bedroom house with a pool, like she had planned, her whole family was crammed into a one bedroom in a bad part of town, and could barely afford to feed themselves.

There are lots of sites with apartments, but also lots of scams. If something looks too good, it is. If you get an email from someone claiming to be traveling for work (tend to be long), be suspicious. If someone is actually out of the area, chances are they're either subletting a room short term or are letting a realtor take care of it.
Yes! I actually am dealing with someone who is claiming to be in Africa. I am absolutely suspicious. They don't even have pictures. I'll forward this info to my roommates ( who I know) . Thank you for everything.
Some of them will have pictures - they tend to be stolen from either other listings, or furniture catalogs. You can use tineye and google to look them up, but you'll be able to figure them out pretty quickly after a while. Yep, Africa, various parts of Asia (especially the Phillipenes) are popular for this. Also, 'I'm on a missionary journey' to catch gullible Christians.
