(Screenwriting) Have you notic…

(Screenwriting) Have you noticed lately in a lot of the films you're seeing that the plot device revolves around what I call the “Pandora’s Box Effect”. It's a very effective way to write a script, it goes like this...Your character opens the box, or finds the clue, or uncovers the plot, or solves the riddle, only to find that he has unleashed forces beyond his control or comprehension, that compel him to take action or be destroyed. Simple premise, but it evolves wonderfully.

Watching Super 8 last week, I believe that fits this model. The craft of releasing just the right amount of fantastical force is key, imho; I believe the audience needs to logically be able to accept the action aspect -- the ability to make it a"real fix" in their minds. As an audience, I don't want to "Pshaw" the ending - to me that's a waste of my money and time.
