Anything Goes : On set stills by Greg Mooney

On set stills

First off, Thanks for the opportunity Stage 32 to talk and network with others! I'm a Still photographer here in Atlanta, I shoot a lot of Theater in town as well as commercial images. However I am tempted by the allure of better money and more creative opportunities in the Film and TV industry. But it is SO difficult to meet the right people! Some days I think the old adage is true: Either your related, sleeping with them or have to kill someone to get in the business! Now I know groups to meet meeting planner, event people and Public Relations people. Any idea if there are any groups for the Movie TV industry?

I have found that the film/TV/video industry has gotten smaller and companies spend more time in development mode than they did before. It is hard for established people and I don't know how new people or students can get started (which is what you are saying). Here in Toronto set photgraphers are part of the cinematography union, have you tried calling IATSE in your city? Atlanta must have a film commission and I would think they publish lists of productions shooting there. You could get the list and call the individual companies to see if they need photography. You could hunt up production companies from the yellow pages, watching credits on TV and movies, or industry trade papers. There is always mandy.com, craiglist and local film co-ops that might be looking for photographers but that would be low or no pay type of jobs.
