Dressing for the Part - Advice from Agents and Actors As we all begin to Deck the Halls and get decked out for Holiday parties, it seems like the ideal time to also chat about dressing for a part when it comes to auditioning for print, commercials, theatre or movies! "Dressing for the part, when requested, can definitely up a person's chances of getting the role," shares Charlie Winfield - who is part of a dynamic commercial print division team for kids/teen and adults at FFT/ FunnyFace Today, Inc . - See more at: http://www.nycastings.com/dmxreadyv2/blogmanager/v3_blogmanager.asp?post...
I'm surprised at some of those actor testimonials in the article. The prevailing wisdom I've come to know over the last 14 years is "dress TOWARD the part", but never wear a costume unless specified. At a callback for Deja Vu, I was coming in for a member of the Coast Guard. I saw a guy in full ARMY fatigues. On top of that, this particular casting director HATES when actors dress in costume. So not only did he go against her wishes, but he also dressed in the WRONG costume. Completely shot himself in the foot. On the flip side, I've seen an actor audition for a lawyer while wearing his real-life nurse scrubs. At the very least they should have dressed in business attire. But in the end, an actor should rarely wear anything that is not in a "normal" closet. Unless you've received specific instructions from the CD, it's too risky showing up (or taping yourself) in full costume.
Thanks a lot! I use to think a lot about what to wear for the part even if I'm not asked to (sometimes just a watch or something to get close to the role), just because it helps me to get into the role and be more relaxed and comfortable for the audition.. not always easy ;)
