Acting : The big move by Daniel Fahey

Daniel Fahey

The big move

I am an aspiring Australian actor and one day I want to move to the UK to ply my art. My question is do I try make a name for myself here in Aus first and wait for interest to come from abroad? or should I move there asap and try and make myself known in the UK?

Dave McCrea

Hey Daniel, If you have the ability to work legally in UK, have a couple monologues, couple credits, some training, know how to do a cold reading, nothing major is holding you in Australia, AND you have a skill set that you can turn into a day job in London, e.g. waiting tables, then yes, you should DEFINITELY go ASAP. Building up more credits in Australia will just postpone the inevitable and unless you make it big in Oz, when you get to London, you'll have to start from scratch in a sense anyway so may as well start sooner rather than later.

Dave McCrea

Also wait til you get to London to get headshots and CV done as each market has it's own way of doing them

Thanks a lot Dave, some very good points! That makes a lot of sense. Cheers.

keep in mind london is one of the most expensive cities in the world. You will want to save up some money before you go and try and get a job lined up before you move if you can. While you are working on that you can do the acting thing in australia getting more credits and more training.

Hey Daniel! One of my friends is an Australian actor who moved over (and still works/lives here) (and to clarify just works as an actor) and in short here's the advice he'd give ; 1. Get Drama School Training in UK 2. Save your money. 3. Visit the city first. 4. Learn 3 British accents including RP. 5. Make sure you have a showreel & a voicereel. 6. Buy Contacts (its an industry UK Book kinda like backstage but for the uk) 7. If it's film and TV you want go states 8. if it's stage you need to train first here in the UK 9. Don't live in central London (in essence get a map and look at zone 4-5) 10. In his view the credits you build in Aus arn't worth that much unless they are massive! Same goes for training he had to re-train before he could get work. In my view (which is somewhat mute as I'm not an Australian) you should always pursue whatever your passionate about but do as much research as you can first. TBF I want to work in the states and pretty much whenever you plan to work anywhere else in the world VISA's and cash are your two main limiting factors. However wherever theres a will there is a way...... Best of luck with it mate x

Thank you very much everyone you have all contributed so much great advice and I will contact you if need be for further advice! I can indeed get a UK passport which is a contributing factor to UK vs USA but I will look further into US working visas. Thank you all extremely, your words are much appreciated.
