A manic and a depressive begin a hospital romance that forces us to question everything we thought we knew about medicine and everything we want to believe about the healing power of love. 

SYNOPSIS:

In the clutches of a manic episode, architectural visionary MATHER JOHN is committed to Bellevue Hospital where he is forced to coexist with a medley of volatile inpatients. Among them is JAIME HILL, a hypersensitive depressive a week removed from her third suicide attempt. Though hospital policy strictly forbids patient romance, one between them immediately develops and they fall deeply in love. They both realize very quickly that Mather's mania is subdued by Jaime's soothing countenance and in turn, her depression is elevated by his infectious passion. When their psychiatrist, DR. SCHROEDER, learns of the affair, he is mired in conflicted. A hopeless romantic himself, he is torn between the Hippocratic Oath and his quest to complete his PhD. Thesis, which attests that in some circumstances, love can be more effective in treating the mentally ill than medication. Schroeder agrees to allow the affair while monitoring their blood work and health closely in an effort to prove, medically, that love can truly conquer all. He learns early on that their neurotransmitter levels are normalizing, perhaps as a direct result from their intimate interactions with each other. And as Mather and Jaime fall deeper in love, their improving conditions fill Schroeder with optimism...reiterating his belief that pharmacology is not always the key to happiness. But after a blissful beginning, Jaime's past ghosts return to haunt her, exacerbated by Mather's overwhelming intensity and intractable hubris. Jaime terminates the relationship and immediately plunges into the depths of depression, whilst sending Mather into a manic rage. With their lives hanging in the balance, they will confront their demons; finding courage and humility they never knew they possessed.
