LOGLINE:

Before he commits suicide, a young therapist embarks on a cross-country quest to say goodbye to and obtain closure with all the people who have touched his life.

SYNOPSIS:

VIRGIL GRUMLEY, a thirty-something overflowing with emotions, steps over the protective railing of a viewing platform overlooking the Grand Canyon. He closes his eyes, takes a deep breath and…jumps?

Two weeks earlier, a much more composed Virgil boxes up the last of his belongings in his empty house. We see evidence of a family lost, a business failed and a tortured life he is prepared to abandon.

After giving away his belongings and purchasing a monster truck to take on a cross-country trip to say goodbye to all the people in his life, Virgil’s plan is upended when his lifelong friend WOODY, a lovable clod, insists on joining him. Virgil acquiesces, provided that Woody never attempts to talk Virgil out of his suicidal agenda. Woody agrees.

After leaving New York, they first stop in New Jersey to visit Virgil’s first girlfriend; an encounter that ends horribly. After pit stops at South of the Border and other unconventional tourist attractions, they visit Virgil’s college mentor at his retirement home in Florida. In a search for closure from the people who touched his life, Virgil is stymied every step of the way. He either cowers from honestly conveying his intentions or discovers how empty his relationships always were.

Though disheartened by the failures, Virgil and Woody proceed and throughout the trip, Virgil emerges from the depressive cocoon in which he had been hibernating. Once reserved and polite, he becomes increasingly forthright and emotive as he continues seeking closure from a life that has failed him.

His sister and his parents reaffirm that which he has always suspected…that his family connections are at best weak and at worst, toxic. Woody attempts to lift his spirits throughout the trip, capturing the events with his video camera and bringing levity to the multiple train-wreck reunions.

When Virgil visits his college girlfriend in Idaho, his question of whether or not they might have a chance at rekindling is answered when he sees how happy she is with her present family…yet another affirmation that he will be leaving nothing behind.

The strain of his friend’s impending departure eventually proves too much to bare and Woody abandons Virgil in Las Vegas. Alone but intent on finishing what he started, Virgil continues to the last person on his farewell tour…his ex-wife. Living in Los Angeles, she is a reality TV star that deserted him years ago…several years before their son Mikey drowned.

After a brief conversation, he realizes how flawed his marriage was and the role he played in his life’s downward trajectory. Without a reason to go on, Virgil heads the Grand Canyon…a place he promised his son they would visit together just months before he died…the place Virgil has chosen to end his life.

Moments before he leaps into the canyon, Woody shows up and hands him his video camera, instructing him to watch its contents before deciding whether or not to jump.

After a tearful embrace, Woody leaves him. The video features comedic and heartwarming highlights of their trip and though moved, Virgil still steps over the railing, stands on the ledge and…jumps?
