A high school basketball prodigy toils with the decision of whether to turn pro or attend college while trying to reconcile with his alcoholic father who was responsible for his mother’s death.
SYNOPSIS:
Kaiser Brubaker is the most sought-after basketball player in the country. Five years after his mother’s untimely death, he struggles with the decision of whether to attend college or make the jump straight to the NBA.
Sharing a cold and loveless household with his alcoholic father, basketball is Kaiser’s sanctuary. It is a reprieve from the pain in his life, a distraction from the pressures of teen superstardom and as escape from the expectations heaped on his shoulders by a nation of rabid sports fans. The gym is his church. His connection to the game of basketball is a spiritual one. And he holds it sacred.
As his team charges toward a state championship, there are only two people in his life that he can trust; Brick, his best friend since the age of three, and Carli, a feisty classmate he shares unrealized feelings with. As the deadlines of whether to apply to colleges or the NBA draft approaches, Kaiser’s life accelerates.
College coaches and professional sponsors circle him like sharks, his father falls off the wagon violently, and Kaiser struggles to find the right path forward in life. On the eve of the state championship, days before Kaiser is set to declare his intentions to the eagerly awaiting public, his father finally reveals the role he played in his mother’s death.
With the inertia of his life-threatening to overwhelm him, Kaiser finds solace in his friends and in his pure love for the game of basketball as he fights his way to the final buzzer...where he hopes the right decision is waiting for him.
