About David

David Lopez is a producer, writer and director based out of Los Angeles who is interested in telling stories that humanize people from underrepresented and marginalized communities of color.

He is the eldest born in a family of 6 of Mexican immigrants. Born and raised in the rural, impoverished community in the San Luis Valley located in southern Colorado. His family did not have much and at, one point, he and his parents shared a living space with his grandparents and Aunt Maria’s family of 6. His father, Martin, eventually opened a small restaurant in Alamosa, Colorado, named Calvillo’s, in honor of their hometown.

David began working at Calvillo’s at 10 years old as a busboy and has continued working there in different roles throughout his life. Working from a young age taught him many skills and he also came to understand responsibility, discipline, and the value of work-ethic. David graduated with honors from Monte Vista Senior High School and went on to attend the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS).

While at UCCS, he began taking film classes and developed a passion for storytelling and started to make short films of his own while getting on as many sets as possible in any role available to learn as much about filmmaking as possible. To help cover his education, he worked at the UCCS Scholarship Office and would regularly drive 3 hours from Colorado Springs to Alamosa on a Friday morning to work at Calvillo’s over the weekend, then drive back to attend classes in Colorado Springs through the week. David graduated Cum Laude with High Distinction and earned his bachelor’s degree in Visual and Performing Arts, with a film studies emphasis, and Spanish in 2018.

In 2020, David enrolled at the University of Southern California MFA program for Film & Television Production. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as classes were cut short, David returned to Alamosa to support his family’s business and would work at Calvillo’s as much as possible.

In his final semester at USC, David has worked on several capstone films, as a Producer and First Assistant Director. He will be graduating in the Spring of 2023 is starting his professional career in development in the entertainment industry.
