THE BOX
By Kristina Van Kirk Hoffman

GENRE: Comedy
LOGLINE:

After the death of his mother, a dutiful Catalina Ferry pilot can finally pursue romance and his dream job in San Francisco until her ghost appears and cannot take her eyes off him - even in the bedroom.

SYNOPSIS:

Ferry pilot, Henry Cole exits the Catalina Ferry for the last time. His cantankerous, oil tanker father, Henry Cole, Sr. meets him on the pier to deliver an ornate Egyptian box with a mysterious combination lock that his mother intended for him after her untimely death. Henry settles into his dream job as a ferry pilot on the San Francisco Bay. He develops a friendship with a co-worker, Lizzy, that soon turns into romance. Before Lizzy arrives at his apartment for dinner, Henry figures out how to open the box which releases the ghost of his exuberant mother, Barbara. As much as he loves his mother, her presence distresses him. Thinking he’d convinced her to stay in the box while he and Lizzy are together, he makes love with Lizzy for the first time. Henry freaks out when he realizes his mother is in the room and saw everything. When he tells Lizzy she had better go home, she is furious thinking he is a one-night stand louse. The next day, Barbara tries to make it up to Henry by suggesting she’ll teach him how to give Lizzy the best orgasm ever. Shocked, Henry turns to yell at his mother, nearly colliding with another ship. He turns hard, sends passengers flying and is suspended from his job, then ends up under house arrest. A man on a mission, Henry first asks his father to send him the instructions that came with the box, but he arrives on Henry’s doorstep instead. With Lizzy’s help, he hires an exotic Professor of Egyptology to make his mother “go to the light.” Barbara is afraid she’ll go straight to Hell and fights back every step of the way.

The Box sounds fun and funny, Kristina Van Kirk Hoffman!

I think you're close to a solid logline. I suggest taking Henry's name out of the logline. Names in loglines are usually for biopics, well-known stories, and franchises (like Mission: Impossible).

I also suggest telling how his mom's ghost screws up his plans.

Thank you Maurice for your suggestions. I'd heard including the protagonist's name was recommended, but I'll look further into that. I will noodle sharing how the ghost screws up his plans. I do provide more info in a paragraph synopsis, but I didn't see a space on this page for that. (FYI she, the ghost of his mother, cannot take her eyes off of him 24/7, which puts a wrench in his love life. He knows this from discovering her in the room. After observing her son in the act, she's decided he needs a tutorial to up his game). I just uploaded a poster for promotional purposes. I look forward to checking out your latest endeavors.

You're welcome, @Kristina.

"The ghost of his mother, cannot take her eyes off of him 24/7, which puts a wrench in his love life" and "After observing her son in the act, she's decided he needs a tutorial to up his game." I like that! Those scenes are going to be so funny!

There's a space to post your synopsis underneath the logline section.
