This fully independent production merges an array of unexpected genres into an epic cinematic experience. While heavily influenced by 1960s and 1970s Hong Kong kung-fu cinema, it also integrates elements of stone movies, reminiscent of American counterculture films from the 1970s to 1990s. Cast and Characters: The film stars Brazilian actor Daniel Rocha (known for "Avenida Brasil," "Império," and "Irmãos Freitas") and Chinese actor Tony Lee ("Os Parças," "Made In China"). The storyline follows two brothers, Daniel and Gabriel, cursed by the Chinese mafia with the dreaded “Three Generations Revenge” Their only hope for survival lies in mastering the secrets of the Smoke Style, a unique martial art taught by an eccentric master. The original soundtrack is composed by André Abujamra, in collaboration with Eron Guarnieri. Awards: In 2022, "The Smoke Master" premiered at the 18th Fantaspoa, the largest fantasy film festival in Latin America, as the closing film. Following this, it was featured at the 46th São Paulo International Film Festival, winning the audience award for Best Brazilian Fiction Film. At the Amazing Stoner Film Fest in Thailand, dedicated to cannabis-themed films, it won the Golden Ganja Award for Best Film. Additionally, at the 7th Rio Fantastik Festival, it received both the jury award for Best Direction and the audience award for Best Film. It also secured the Best Film award at the 12th Balneário Camboriú International Film Festival’s Night Showcase. In 2023, the film participated in the 25th Punta Del Este International Film Festival in an open-air, legalized screening and won Best International Film at the 23rd Washington DC Independent Film Festival, with the directors in attendance. Beyond these awards, "The Smoke Master" was showcased at various festivals across Brazil (Phenomena in São Paulo, Crash in Goiânia, International Fantastic Film Festival in Brasília, among others) and internationally (Cinequest in California, OIFF in Florida, Macabro in Mexico, Rojo Sangre in Argentina, Rising Sun in Japan, and more). Commercial Release: The film was awarded a SPCine grant for the distribution of small and medium-sized movies and was released in 2023 in movie theaters in Brazil. In 2024, the movie premiered in Netflix Brazil, Latin America, Mexico and Portugal and secured deals in the USA, India and Taiwan.
