After the rising tides turn New England into New Island, star-crossed teens Macky and Ket are about to be taken to the mining camps with other refugees, when the arrival of an ancient species brings hope that only Ket understands.

SYNOPSIS:

Macky and Ket are living alone on New Island (so called because the rising tides separated New England from mainland USA). Ket's grandma Molly has just passed on and she is grieving but also agitated. Macky shares his beloved Basho haikus with her to try and cheer her and she shares the sacrificial poetry of Cheryl Savageau in return. The radio tells them to expect a refugee boat to arrive soon to take them to remote mining camps with other refugees escaping the whale flu. But instead, Macky is startled when a boat brings a non human visitor called Elder Brother. Grandma Molly had prepared Ket for this day with her ancient stories. So she leaves the island with this creature. Macky is devastated because Ket is his whole world. But he soon learns Ket and Elder Brother are the only ones who can save a piece of humanity.
