Family bonds are tested as eight people and four generations must learn to co-exist under one roof after a sudden death in the family coincides with a grandmother's fourth shoplifting charge in less than a year and a daughter and son-in-law move in to supervise so she can avoid incarceration and they can keep the family from falling apart.
SYNOPSIS:
Darrell and Penny are traveling the world, enjoying a peaceful retirement when they receive the shocking double dose of bad news that the father of their granddaughter has died suddenly and Penny's mother has been arrested - again - for petty shoplifting. The only chance for Penny's mother to avoid incarceration is if Penny commits to moving in as a caretaker. Their daughter and granddaughter relocates with them as well and four generations are forced to learn how to love one another while they live with each other, or go crazy trying.
Eight people and a husky are thrown together as cross generational challenges threaten the sanity of Penny who reluctantly decides to take charge of the barely controlled chaos. She and Darrell must transition from a leisurely life spent in the tropical location of their choice to a cramped 3 bedroom house in a cold midwestern town with a daily routine that requires the grand kids get to school, help the kids get back on their feet and make sure the parents get to their doctors appointments on time. And don't forget Sunday breakfast at Golden Corral!
Roommates explores the dynamic of a nuclear family with tenuous family bonds that will be tested, along with their love, as they are thrown into a situation that is ideal for no one. Penny and Darrell have been estranged from their daughter and barely know their granddaughter, and decades of sweeping issues under the rug with their parents have created distances that seem impossible to bridge. Penny discovers an empathy and need to heal as she undertakes a quest of what it means to honor your parents when they haven't honored you and learns how much family really can mean no matter how late in life they become important.
