A wallflower teenager switches bodies with his larger-than-life archeologist grandfather after inadvertently opening an ancient pharaoh’s portal, and together, they must prevent the enslavement of the world at ground zero, his high school dance.

"A Switch in Time" is written along the lines of films like "A Night at the Museum" and "The Mummy." Dylan, a high school senior, struggles to move on with his life after his older brother died from a rock climbing accident; it seems too unlikely for the skilled climber, and it turns out to be from Ramses VIII’s curse, but Dylan doesn’t learn this until later. His intuition, though, causes him to be suspicious. So, when his grandfather archeologist, Arthur, helps him with his history presentation about Arthur's discovery of Ramses VIII's tomb 40 years ago, Dylan realizes Arthur's obsession with the pharaoh is unhealthy. Meanwhile, Dylan rebuffs his friend, Rachel's invitation to a dance, choosing to live his life like a ghost while Arthur tells him he'd give anything to be young again.

Later, during Arthur's book event at the museum to promote his fictional memoir blending fiction with his archeological experiences, Arthur collapses after speaking in a booming voice as Ramses VIII that he is returning, echoing the lore Dylan presented in class. Arthur gets out of the hospital and comes to Dylan's non-party for his birthday where Dylan didn't invite any of his friends and reveals how he has Ramses VIII's amulet, and when Dylan reaches out to take it from his grandfather, the two end up in a tug-of-war which opens the portal in Dylan's mirror; instead of Ramses VIII possessing either of them, though, Dylan and Arthur switch bodies, but because Arthur has a heart attack, Dylan ends up as a ghost.

When Dylan leaves the amulet unguarded to see what Arthur is doing with his body and his life, his father enters his bedroom to discover it, and once he wears it, this allows Ramses VIII to take over him. Now, with time running out, Dylan must reclaim his body at his high school dance and profess his love for Rachel to prevent Ramses VIII from permanently seizing Dylan's father's body during a major moon convergence and embarking on his mission to enslave the world.
