THE ROOF
By Mark Thomson

GENRE: Comedy
LOGLINE:

When four ordinary men are remanded into a New Zealand prison through bad luck, bureaucracy and systemic failure, their attempts to quietly survive are mistaken for coordination — turning them into the apparent leaders of a prison crisis they barely understand.

SYNOPSIS:

Sy, Arkie, Hau and Wei come from completely different worlds, but each is swept into remand by an indifferent system that fails to hear them, explain itself or treat them as individuals. Inside prison, their confusion about routines, rules and survival etiquette causes one misunderstanding after another, culminating in a simple “help list” that authorities read as organized leadership. Before they can correct the perception, they are pushed to the center of a larger prison uprising and end up stranded on the roof under floodlights, media glare and riot-police pressure. The pilot is a dramedy about institutional absurdity, male vulnerability and how systems create threats by refusing to see people clearly.
