When a struggling singer-songwriter is suddenly beamed aboard a luxury alien pleasure cruise to be the headline act, he must navigate unexpected galactic stardom and find his voice to stop the ship’s ruthless captain from invading Earth.
SYNOPSIS:
Talented singer-songwriter BEN STARR (25) will do anything to get his music out there to touch his fans with his gift for song. Determined, he promotes himself to record labels and audiences through digital downloads and YouTube videos shot at a gritty New York dive bar where he bartends and performs for a rough crowd accompanied by RUFUS (30s) his irreverent piano player. His luck turns when loyal girlfriend, MELANIE (25) books him for a prestigious event hosted by her boss, the mayor. However, the mayor’s wealthy nephew, FOSTER (30s), jealous and interested in Melanie, sabotages Ben’s act leading Ben to break up with her in a fit of self-doubt. Seeking validation, Ben impulsively accepts a sketchy last-minute gig only to be abducted by aliens and transported onto the interstellar cruise ship Mylanta where he’s the headline performer. THELNA, the ships’ bossy entertainment director, reveals that his songs are extremely popular throughout the galaxy before pushing him onstage where Ben gives the concert of a lifetime even though his rabid alien fans scare the crap out of him.
Thelna directs Ben through a demanding promotional schedule eager to secure his commitment for a galaxy tour so she can become his manager. Overwhelmed, Ben stalls the decision until after the cruise since he wants to return home and reconcile with Melanie. Thrust into this weird and wacky world, Ben’s superstar status attracts the attention of MARINA – a spoiled alien aspiring singer who seeks to use his celebrity to launch her own career much to the chagrin of her imposing father, the ships’ Captain PHISTO, on loan from the military of the warrior planet Aggressiva, where entertainment is considered a pointless indulgence. When Ben performs at the captain’s table, Phisto physically doubles over in pain whenever Ben sings a particular note while Ben, basking in the glow of his adoring fans, wishes Melanie could witness his sudden success.
Meanwhile back on Earth, Melanie is baffled by Ben’s sudden disappearance as Foster helps her recognize that supporting Ben’s aspirations has led her to neglect her own and together, they mount her campaign for city council. Addressing a large audience, Melanie experiences stage fright and begins to understand Ben’s pressures. She wishes she could tell him, if only she knew where he was…
Ben connects with his alien fans at photo ops, meet and greets and while filming his music video as Phisto does everything in his power to ruin Ben’s career, scheduling evacuation drills during concerts and forcing he and Rufus to participate in a brutal war re-enactment. Rufus indulges in every vice available as Ben longs for someone to share his success realizing fame isn’t everything he dreamed. When Marina sneaks into his suite to seduce him, Ben narrowly escapes a fatal fall when his deck collapses due to Phisto’s interference. Pursued by potentially ravenous fans, exhausted Ben finds refuge in an excursion shuttle where he befriends GLOB, his inexperienced opening act, mentoring him during a rehearsal on the planet surface.
Exasperated by his inability to defeat Ben, Phisto orders him to make his daughter famous…or else. When Ben attempts to coach her, he identifies two big obstacles, she lacks talent or drive. To mask her shortcomings, Ben and team mount an elaborate production featuring extraterrestrial dancers and alien pyrotechnics. At their final concert, Glob premieres his new act to great acclaim while Marina bombs prompting Phisto to throw Ben in the brig but not before revealing his impending invasion to steal Earth’s oxygen. Locked away as Phisto departs, Ben is powerless to stop him as Thelna admits she knew of Phisto’s plan, took Ben from Earth to save him, and made him famous by sharing his music throughout the universe. Angry that she used him but grateful he’s a star (and he wants a cut of the profits), Ben agrees to let Thelna represent him in exchange for her help returning him to Earth to save Melanie and the planet. Before boarding the craft to carry out this impossible mission, Rufus abandons Ben opting instead to enjoy a comfortable celebrity lifestyle in this new world.
Back on Earth, Ben and his bar friends help him and Thelna hijack the Times Square cameras on New Year’s Eve. When his warnings, like his career, go unnoticed, Ben sings with renewed confidence drawing in more viewers - including Melanie who arrives on scene refusing to believe the unbelievable explanation of his disappearance. Ben apologizes admitting fame is meaningless without someone to share it, while Thelna adjusts the transmission to broadcast his set to every device on the planet. As the invasion intensifies, Rufus returns to help his friend along with his new girlfriend, Marina. Ben recalls the note that hurt Phisto and instructs the audience to use his voice against the Aggressians; his song is intercepted by Earth’s military and circulated globally, ultimately changing the course of battle. By reconciling with Melanie and defeating Phisto, Ben experiences his big breakthrough, cementing his status as a star – at least on his home planet.
