SYNOPSIS:

On Valentine’s Day in Los Angeles Pete, his best friend, Dutch, and his co-worker Kevin hang out in their favorite bar, play chess, and debate love with lesbian bartender, Thea. Pete and Kevin work at Pete’s father’s advertising agency. Kevin will do and say anything to get what he wants but Pete has a hard time telling a lie. In fact, whenever he lies to a woman he loses his erection. After Pete gets a drink thrown in his face by one ex-girlfriend and an exploding heart shaped box of dust bunnies from another, the guys escape outside as one of Kevin’s exes literally takes a dump on his Porsche. They realize you don’t really know how crazy someone is until you break up. In the gaming spirit they develop a competition where they choose four girls to date, win their affections, and then break up with them. If the girls pass the Break Up Test and don’t turn out to be crazy the players then have to woo them back to win the game and potentially find true love. After overcoming a few obstacles, Kevin, Dutch, and Thea manage to date and sleep with their randomly chosen test subjects but Pete cannot seal the deal. He falls hard for PR company owner, Cate who believes in fate. Cate starts up an Internet affair with Jimmy, a handsome dairy farmer from Connecticut who had a crush on her in third grade. When Cate and Pete are thrown together on an ad campaign for heart disease and the Hollywood Heart Hike he eventually charms his way into her heart and into her bed. Saint Patrick’s day is the break up deadline and everyone else manages to do the dirty deed except Pete who doesn’t want to lie and break up with Cate. Pete gets drunk and gets in a fight with Kevin over the hypocrisy and dishonesty inherent in the break up test and Pete’s father finds out Pete lost their biggest account because he insisted on telling the truth. Pete finally breaks up with Cate and confesses that in the process of trying to weed out the ass holes he has become one and does not deserve to be loved. Easter is the deadline for everyone to get back together. During the Hollywood Heart Hike misunderstandings, dogs, and a snake complicate matters but the couples manage to reunite. Except for Pete who is fired by his dad and punched in the nose by Jimmy. After reaching his lowest point, Pete realizes he needs to forgive himself for being an ass hole and forgive his father for cheating on his mom years ago. With an impassioned speech at the bar, Pete thanks the Break Up Test for teaching him about love, honesty, and forgiveness, and finding true love for his friends. He then thanks Cate for allowing him to feel and he professes his love for her. Cate still ends up leaving with Jimmy. Pete finally wins a chess match with Dutch and gets offered a new job from a mysterious stranger who Pete thought was gay and coming on to him. Cate comes back in the bar with what Pete thinks is another booby-trapped exploding box. It turns out to be just the opposite, a box of little stuffed bunnies with dust rags. Cate forgives Pete and they reconcile. Pete tells an innocent white lie without losing his erection and all the couples win the game.
