Penelope Bartlau is the Artistic Director and CEO of Barking Spider Visual Theatre. Her work encompasses directing, puppetry, writing and dramaturgy, design and storytelling.
She develops and directs works for museums and galleries, theatre, festivals, radio and that is site specific. Over the last 9 years with Barking Spider Visual Theatre, she has generated in excess of 55 works for and with a wide variety of partners, stakeholders and communities.
TRAINING/ACADEMIC – Master of Puppetry from the Victorian College of the Arts. She worked as an actor for 20 years (theatre, television, film, radio, having trained in physical theatre/improvisation (Commedia Dell'Arte, Antonio Fava, Italy) and in method acting (Lee Strasberg in New York). She studied screenwriting at RMIT. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree (Monash University -Double Major in English Literature and Politics).
AWARDS - In the past 3 years Penelope has been awarded a Dome Centenary Fellowship (State Library of Victoria), and with Barking Spider three MAGNA Awards (Museum and Art Galleries Awards) for public programmes for/with families. She has also won awards in the past for her creative writing.
