Star Wars and Grease were two movies on the same Beta tape in my Zenith VTR when I was seven years old. Rewind after rewind, these movies defined my direction in film and music. The characters, sound effects and music of these films inspired me to be a musician and a sound creator. Mixing records as a DJ for my high school inspired me to take things to another level with the software I was coming across in the late 1980s. MIDI synthesizers and drum machines had just come out a few years back and creating samples was just starting with only a few seconds sampling time in 1985.
In the next ten years I would DJ and make tapes that would create a storyline and a soundscape for friends and family along with learning how to work with pre/post-production sound editing tools like Pro Tools and Digital Performer. Pro Tools has grown a lot and so have I incorporating storytelling skills with sound design and visual effects compositing in my skill set. Working with other disciplines in the filmmaking process has been illuminating and definitely rewarding. Sound Design and Visual Effects have so much in common psychologically and esthetically as well as the importance they both have at the very beginning of your filmmaking process. Mentors and friends include Academy award winners as well as up and coming directors from around the world. My studies on film sound are extensive and I bring a fresh perspective with my own experiences. I also have run my own film festival and have discussed the importance of sound and how it can make or break your film and your festival submissions.
Take advantage of my experience and bring me on in the pre-production process of your story.
That's when it counts. Never wait to bring your sound designer on till the last minute.
