Jim gets a message on someone else's phone which changes his life but not the way he hopes

SYNOPSIS:

Jim, an ex-gambler and married to the ever forgiving Cassie, has lost his job and is sitting in a cafe after pretending to go to work. On the seat next to him is a mobile phone which sends a text message through. Jim recognizes it as a horse 'tip' and, despite his promise to Cassie about gving up gambling, makes his way to the nearest bookies. The horse appears to be a rank outsider and Jim considers the tip could be a bluff. As he mulls over the bet he bumps into his estranged father who is an unreformed gambler, who gave Jim the habit, and made his mother's life a miserable existence. He suspects Jim of being 'in the know' and Jim admits he has a tip but gives his Dad the name of another horse in the race. Jim finally places the bet and the outsider romps in at a huge price. His father, seeing Jim collect, curses him, but also espies Jim clutching the phone tightly in his hand as another text comes across. The shop manager kicks him out thinking he as been the victim of a 'coup' and Jim goes in search of another bookies. The morning paper, however, does not have the name of the horse listed but Jim considers it to be a foreign runner and only the bookies will have those listings. On his way to the car he is hit over the head and blacks out. When he recovers his cash and phone has been stolen. In depseration he calls Cassie from a public phone to beg for cash but she refuses suspecting it was for a bet. She tells him she'll be home late as she is going to drop a colleague home. Jim, resigned to defeat, drives home. A thick fog envelops the town but as Jim reaches a steep hill close to home the fog lifts at the top of the rise and he spots his dad walking along with the missing phone in his hand. He swerves and pulls over, the car's front wheel nestling against the kerb and no hand brake on. He grabs his Dad and asks for the money and phone but he has lost most of the money on bets as he could not find a horse with the same name as the phone 'tip' Jim looks but the 'tip' is not the same as the one he saw earlier. Suddenly his dad collapses and the 'tip' his dad got is finally revealed for what is was. As Jim then understands what his 'tip' means behind him his car has loosed itself from the kerb and careering away downhill, uncannily in a straight line, back into the fog toward a junction at the bottom of the hill. Jim chases it vainly screaming 'Cassie'. At the foot of the hill Cassie is sitting in her car waiting to make her turn at the junction.
